Government Web Site on Health Debuts in Spanish

Educates consumers about arthritis, rheumatic diseases

THURSDAY, Oct. 23, 2003 (HealthDayNews) -- There's a new Spanish-language Web site that offers health education and research information about arthritis, rheumatic diseases and disorders of the bone, skin, muscle and connective tissue.

The U.S. National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) Web site is called En Espanol.

Launched during Hispanic Heritage Month, the site offers information about health, research, grants and clinical trials available on the NIAMS Web site.

"Our Spanish-language site is a step beyond the production of health information in Spanish. It is our attempt to make the NIAMS Web site more accessible to the growing population of Spanish-speaking individuals," NIAMS director Dr. Stephen I. Katz says in a prepared statement.

En Espanol provides an opportunity for people who speak Spanish to learn more about NIAMS' mission and how that is implemented through research and other activities. There's also information about NIAMS' leadership and budget and a list of contacts for questions about grants and clinical trials.

The site was prepared in collaboration with professionals who are experts in public health issues or the Spanish language.
