Fat-Free Fallacies

Calories still count

(HealthDayNews) -- Just because a food label touts a product as being fat-free, sugar-free or low in carbohydrates, it doesn't mean you can eat all you want. Your overall calorie intake is still important.

Here are some other tidbits about diet food, courtesy of Moses Taylor Hospital in Pennsylvania:

  • Diet margarine: almost all the calories in margarine, diet or not, come from fat.
  • Fat-free cakes: the fat's usually been replaced by sugar, so they're still high in calories.
  • Fruit juice-sweetened cookies: fruit juice is a form of sugar, so these cookies have almost the same number of calories as regular cookies.
  • Muffins: the average muffin has more fat and calories than a cream-filled doughnut with chocolate frosting.
