A Pain in the Glass

Lead can seep into beverages

(HealthDayNews) -- The next time you see someone drinking wine straight from the bottle, be aware that it might just be the latest trend.

According to the journal Food Additives and Contamination, those who drink straight from the bottle are avoiding some very unpleasant possibilities from glass ware.

When the Stazione Sperimentale del Vetro of Murano-Venezia, Italy, studied lead release from crystal ware, they found that cola drinks are safe because they draw very little lead from the glass. But white wine, the drink that you're most likely to drink from crystal ware, draws the highest level of lead of any of the liquids studied.

Once you start washing your glasses, however, the rules change. When a crystal glass had been through the dishwasher three times, the levels of lead in wine didn't change, but the levels of lead in the cola drinks increased.
