Born to Shop -- Safely

Certain foods need special care

You probably think you know everything you need to know to shop safely for food. You check the dates on dairy and meat products to make sure the produce is fresh. But there's more you can -- and should -- do.

For instance, be careful when packing your groceries at the checkout counter and when transporting them home. The Oklahoma State Department of Health says you should put perishables in your cart last. And be sure to bag raw meats separately in plastic so other foods are protected from the drippings, a potential source of food poisoning.

On the way home, make sure foods that can spoil are stored in the air-conditioned part of your vehicle, not the trunk. And if your groceries will be in the car for more than an hour, pack the perishables in a cooler with ice.
