Calorie-Laden Crackers

Can be as fattening as cookies

(HealthDayNews) -- The next time you reach for a handful of crackers, read the label. You may think that you're grabbing a low-fat snack, but some popular crackers contain as many calories and as much fat per ounce as cookies or a candy bar, according to the Wellness Letter from the University of California, Berkeley.

If you want to munch on some crackers, look for whole grains: whole wheat or whole rye should be the only flour, or at least the first ingredient. Don't let the words "hearty wheat," "stoned wheat," or "multigrain" fool you. These crackers are made from refined white flour.

And choose the brands that have at least 3 grams of fiber and less than 4 grams of fat per ounce.
