Morning Munchies

Start your day with a nutritious breakfast

(HealthDayNews) -- Breakfast has long been touted as the most important meal of the day. But what you eat for breakfast is equally relevant, according to the Johns Hopkins Medical Center. Foods like bacon, eggs, doughnuts, sausages, butter and cream may fill your stomach, but they'll also give you an overdose of saturated fat.

Here are some more nutritious alternatives:

  • Try whole wheat toast with low-fat cottage cheese. Place it under a broiler until the cheese bubbles, and top it with strawberries and a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • Save left-over brown rice in individual freezer containers. Turn them into bowls of cereal by covering the rice with water and reheating them in the microwave. Mix in raisins or chopped fresh fruit and add skim milk.
  • Scramble the whites of eggs only. You'll get the protein without the cholesterol.
  • Sweeten oatmeal, oat bran, or other whole grain cereals with fresh fruit or raisins instead of honey or sugar.
