Salt Substitutes

Use other seasonings to cut your salt intake

(HealthDayNews) -- As much as salt is an important part of a healthy diet, too much can be harmful to your health. Salt is loaded with sodium, which in excess causes high blood pressure.

One teaspoon of salt has 2000 milligrams of sodium. This almost surpasses the 2300 milligrams you need in a day, according to Johns Hopkins Medical Center.

So instead of reaching for the salt shaker, flavor your food with garlic, onion, herbs, spices, vinegar and low-salt soup broth. Avoid some brands of tomato juice, which can be high in salt.
