Dangerous Dough

Cookie batter with raw eggs unsafe to eat

Your kids love to eat the cookie dough left in the mixing bowl, and you probably have fond memories of doing the same thing in your mother's kitchen.

But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says knock it off. It's a dangerous practice because of the raw eggs in the batter: The eggs can carry salmonella.

If you let your kids eat the batter, or taste it yourself, use pasteurized eggs, which often are found in the dairy case in supermarkets. The pasteurization process uses heat to kill harmful bacteria, the agency says.
