Cholesterol Screening

It should start in infancy

(HealthDayNews) -- Almost half the U.S. population has high or borderline cholesterol, according to the American Heart Association.

So what can you do about it? Medical guidelines recommend that cholesterol screening begin at age 18, with screenings at five-year intervals.

But Duke University Medical Center says much earlier screenings may help prevent serious health problems later in life. In fact, with the current childhood obesity epidemic, a healthy lifestyle that includes watching your weight, watching what you eat, and screening cholesterol should begin at birth, Duke says.
