Baby Blues

Most new moms don't get them

(HealthDayNews) -- Postnatal depression, despite the volumes of press about it, isn't what most expectant moms should expect, says an Australian study.

According to a report in Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology, the frequency of clinically significant depression within six months of the birth of a child is very low. Even when new mothers become depressed, it's usually not severe and doesn't last very long.

However, when researchers at The University of Queensland in Australia measured maternal depression, they found that while it was low at six months, it was considerably higher when the child was five years old.
