(HealthDay News) -- Birth by Caesarean (C-section) is a serious surgical procedure that can lead to complications. The surgery involves an incision made in the mother's abdomen and through her uterus to remove the baby, often while the woman is still awake.
Aside from significant recovery time after a C-section, the British Columbia Ministry of Health says women who deliver this way are more prone to complications than women who deliver vaginally.
Possible complications from C-sections include infections, gallbladder problems, and injury due to the surgery. Some women who have a C-section delivery will also need to deliver via C-section in the future because of a risk of tearing open the surgery scar during subsequent childbirth, the ministry says.
