Health Tip: What is a Breech Birth?

When the baby is positioned for a feet-first delivery

(HealthDay News) -- Babies are typically positioned head down in the mother's womb, and are delivered head-first. When the baby is turned upside down, positioning it for a feet-first birth, the position is called breech.

Babies in the breech position can still be born safely, says the American Academy of Family Physicians. However, to avoid possible complications, many doctors choose to deliver breech babies via Caesarean section.

Babies who are born prematurely are more likely to be breech than babies delivered at full term, says the academy. If more than one baby is in the womb, one or more also are at increased risk of breech birth.
